This Strawberry Salad with Smoked Goat Cheese is a vibrant summer dish that combines sweet, juicy berries with creamy, slightly smoky cheese for a beautifully balanced flavour.
Hey, folks – today I’m sharing a salad that feels both simple and a little special at the same time. It’s one of those combinations that comes together effortlessly, yet delivers something memorable. So, let’s dive into this Strawberry Salad with Smoked Goat Cheese.
But before we jump to the recipe, let me refer to our recent vacation to Europe.
Smoked Goat Cheese – A Personal Favourite
It would be an understatement to say that the Netherlands is a paradise for cheese lovers. During our stay, a large portion of our meals consisted of local cheeses, deli meats, fresh bread, and simple vegetable sides. While we tried many varieties, one stood out so much that we kept coming back to it – smoked goat cheese.
It was incredibly smooth, delicately smoky, and wonderfully balanced. While smoked cheddar or gouda are more common here in Canada, smoked goat cheese felt like a discovery. Naturally, we brought some back home – and even before returning, I already knew it would end up in a salad like this.

What Goes Well with Smoked Goat Cheese in Salads
Smoked goat cheese pairs beautifully with a variety of ingredients, making this salad easy to adapt.

- Nuts: Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, or almonds.
- Greens: Peppery arugula or mild spinach.
- Dressings: Honey vinaigrette, balsamic, or citrus-based dressings.
How to Build a Well-Balanced Strawberry Salad
Creating a great strawberry salad is all about balance. You want to combine sweet, savoury, acidic, and textural elements in a way that feels harmonious.
- Sweet element: Strawberries are the natural base.
- Creamy element: Smoked goat cheese adds richness.
- Crunchy element: Nuts provide contrast.
- Fresh element: Greens bring structure and lightness.
- Acidic element: A vinaigrette ties everything together.
When each of these components is present, the salad feels complete rather than one-dimensional.
Dressing Ideas for Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad
While a simple olive oil and lemon dressing works beautifully, you can also experiment with other options.
- Honey vinaigrette: Enhances sweetness and balances acidity.
- Balsamic dressing: Adds depth and slight richness.
- Citrus dressing: Bright and refreshing, perfect for summer.
The key is to keep the dressing light so it doesn’t overpower the strawberries or cheese.

Your European cheese adventure sounds amazing, and it’s great that you brought back a new favorite to incorporate into your recipes.
This salad sounds fantastic, Ben! And I agree with you about cheese from the Netherlands – we also brought a LOT back when we went. It’s hard to find hard goat cheeses here in the States, but we’ve found a couple of stores that carry fantastic hard goat cheese – now I need to see if they have a smoked one! Or maybe I could smoke it myself?? We need to explore this idea…
Thank you David!
I agree that it is not easy to find hard goat cheeses in North America. I think smoking your own cheese sounds amazing!
Oooohhh, smoked goat cheese sounds wonderful! I’m now on the lookout for some! Such a beautiful salad Ben. And I’m with you; meats, cheese, bread and some fruit is my favorite kind of meal.
Thank you Tasia!
I honestly don’t think we will find smoked goat cheese here, but I could attempt cold smoking some goat Gouda to see how it would work. Great salad recipe, Ben!
Thank you David. I think smoked Gouda would give a great result!
Yes not sure I like goat cheese but as per what Tandy said (hehehe) I do like smoked cheese. And I love strawbs in a salad. great work Ben :)

Actually, hard goat cheese is much more delicious and not so…well goat-y than soft / unrepented cheeses like chevre. So if you never had hard goat cheese, I encourage you to give it a try :)
I’ve had some interesting smoked cheeses but as far as I know never a smoked goat cheese. One of the pleasures of traveling is discovering new foods to enjoy. Your salad photo is great.
Thanks Karen! Yes, I guess smoked goat cheese can be mostly found in some European countries.
I am not a fan of goats cheese so this is not for me. I do like smoked cheese though. I’m glad you enjoyed the cheeses in The Netherlands. They really make some amazing varieties.
Thank you Tandy!
I need to find smoked goat cheese to try. The salad looks fantastic.
Thank you Angie!
I love your photography so much. These photos are spectacular, as is this salad recipe.
