Why Blueberries Work So Well in Summer Salads
Blueberries are wonderful in savoury salads because they add natural sweetness, freshness, and juicy texture without overpowering the other ingredients.
They pair especially well with:
- Salty cheeses like feta or goat cheese.
- Nuts such as almonds or pecans.
- Balsamic dressing and citrus.
- Peppery greens and fresh herbs.
Their sweetness also helps balance tangy and savoury flavours, making salads feel more vibrant and refreshing.
Sweet, Salty, Creamy, and Crunchy: Why This Blueberry Almond Feta Salad Works
One reason this blueberry feta salad feels so balanced is the contrast of textures and flavours.
- Blueberries: Juicy sweetness.
- Feta: Creamy saltiness.
- Almonds: Crunch and nuttiness.
- Cucumber: Fresh crisp texture.
- Balsamic dressing: Sweet-tangy finish.
Together, these ingredients create a salad that feels refreshing, layered, and satisfying despite being very simple.
What Summer Fruits and Berries Work Well in Salads?
Fruit and berries add freshness, sweetness, acidity, and juicy texture to savoury salads, making them especially perfect for summer dishes.
Some of the best summer options include:
- Blueberries: Sweet, juicy, and wonderfully refreshing.
- Strawberries: Bright and fragrant with gentle sweetness.
- Peaches, apricots, and nectarines: Soft, juicy, and naturally summery.
- Raspberries and blackberries: Slightly tart and full of flavour.
- Watermelon and melon: Crisp, refreshing, and hydrating.
- Cherries: Sweet, rich, and excellent in more robust salads.
- Figs: Jammy and elegant, especially toward late summer.
Many fruits and berries pair beautifully with leafy greens, herbs, nuts, soft cheeses, and light vinaigrettes, creating salads that feel fresh, vibrant, and balanced.

The blue is stunning! What a fabulous combination: sweet, salty, crunchy and so fresh! I recommend trying a Greek sheep’s milk feta (usually a lot more than Canadian feta) but it’s significantly better. I was sooo relieved when the humidity broke, Toronto can be horrible in the summer.
Thanks so much Eva!

This sounds like a wonderful summer salad. While I don’t have any feta but I do have some mild Gorgonzola that I think would work.

We love salads for a main course too, Ben. Especially when they’re hearty and have all of the flavors and textures of this one. Love the boost of protein from fetas and almonds and I will never, ever say no to blueberries. One of the things I look forward to most in summertime.
Thanks so much Marissa!
