Jump to RecipeHello folks – how are you doing? I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend.
I am doing well too, thanks for asking! But I must admit it is so hard to get back to blogging schedule after being away for nearly a month. So far, I have managed to share only one recipe – this Strawberry Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing. Anyway, I hope I would be able to post more regularly, and apparently visit my fellow food bloggers’ blogs, too!
Blueberry Maple Lemonade
Now, let’s talk briefly about this lovely lemonade.
Many years ago, when I had just started this blog, I learned from David (Spiced) that you can use maple syrup as a sweetener for lemonades and iced tea. That was this Sparkling Maple Lemonade. I certainly knew that you could use different sweeteners (i.e., I have always liked honey), it had never occurred to me to use maple for refreshing drinks.
And truth be told, I have been using maple syrup in drinks often ever since. In fact, I particularly like it in cocktails, in place of simple syrup. Make sure to check this Maple Rum Cocktail, Blueberry Gin Cocktail, Apple Cider Rum Cocktail.
While you can use of course fresh blueberries for a lemonade, they can be a tad bland. That is why I opted for cooking down the blueberries with maple syrup to concentrate the flavour. Bonus: if you do not use all the sauce for the lemonade, it will be so good on your ice cream or with your morning oatmeal or cottage cheese.

hoursA refreshing and luscious Blueberry Maple Lemonade to cool your down on a sweltering summer day.
Ingredients
- Blueberry Maple Concentrate:
5 cups (about 750 gr.) frozen blueberries thawed and drained
1/2 cup (120 ml.) maple syrup
1 tbsp. lime or lemon juice
- Blueberry Maple Lemonade:
1 cup Blueberry Maple concentrate
1/3 cup (80 ml.) lemon or lime juice
4 cups water
more maple syrup, if needed
fresh mint
ice
Directions
- Blueberry Maple Concentrate:
- Make sure to thaw the blueberries in advance (overnight) and drain from the excessive liquid (don’t get rid of all of it.)
- In a pot combine the blueberries, maple syrup, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Then reduce heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes to reduce in volume. Remove from heat and let the concentrate completely cool.
- Blueberry Maple Concentrate:
- To make lemonade, combine 1 cup of the concentrate (you may choose to pass the mixture through a fine sieve mash, but I did not do this.) with water, lime or lemon juice, and mint. Adjust flavour to your liking by adding more of the concentrate, maple syrup, or lime juice. Chill for an hour to infuse even further (although can be enjoyed right away!) then serve with ice and enjoy!

I am completely on board for this recipe, Ben! In fact, I have way too many lemons now, lots of frozen blueberries, and someone just gave us a huge half gallon jug of maple syrup from Vermont. I’m ready to go, and the mint is growing perfectly in the garden. I hope you guys had a wonderful vacation.

I’m so glad I was able to inspire you with the maple here, Ben! I love that maple lemonade, and the addition of blueberries is perfect for summer. We have a bunch of fresh blueberries in the fridge right now, so I should whip up a glass of this!!

I just love the colour of this blueberry lemonade but half a cup of maple syrup seems like a lot, I don’t love a sweet drink. It is a lovely colour though.
Hi Eva, I agree – I don’t like too sweet drinks (nor desserts) either. But I would not call this lemonade overly sweet. Maple syrup is not as potent as other sweeteners in my book. Besides, frozen berries and fruit tend to seem less sweet in my opinion. But again, that can always be tweaked for anyone’s taste (i.e., less syrup, more citrus juice, etc.) :)

What a beautiful refreshing drink to head into the summer months. Your presentation is stunning. I enjoy maple syrup and its never occurred to me it can sweetens drinks too-without overpowering other flavors.
Thanks for sharing your inspiration with us.
Thank you Velva!

I am not a huge fan of classic lemonade, but different fruity and herbal twists – absolutely!
