Sea Buckthorn Cocktail

Hello folks! I hope you are doing well, and fall (yes, can you believe that?) has been treating you well. And while nights and mornings have gotten significantly cooler (no complains!), there are still a plenty of warm days and sunshine. September and October are two my favourite months, along with May!

That said, there is still many possibilities to enjoy a cocktail (or two). And this Sea Buckthorn Cocktail perfectly fits the bill; it is light and refreshing, yet it offers a seasonal flavour. While you can enjoy frozen sea buckthorns (aka seaberries) all year round (if they are available where you live), they are autumn berries. They are also packed with vitamin C and other essential elements, so they are perfect for the cold time of the year, to boost your immune system.

Sea Buckthorn Cocktail

To make this luscious cocktail, you will need only four ingredients. White rum, orange liquor such as triple sec, orange or lemon juice, and of course, sea buckthorns. This cocktail is already quite sweet; however, the acidity levels in sea buckthorns could vary. That’s why a little addition of honey could be great, too!

You will need to extract the juice first. To make it, you need to combine berries with a bit of water and simmer for a few minutes, also mashing them. Cool, then pass the berries though a mesh sieve / strainer. Now, you can make the cocktail.

Sea Buckthorn Cocktail is a refreshing drink that combines the freshness and citrusy notes from sea buckthorn berries, orange liquor, and rum.

Ingredients

  • Sea Buckthorn Concentrate:
  • 1/2 cup (about 75 gr.) sea buckthorns, fresh or frozen

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml.) water

  • Sea Buckthorn Cocktail:
  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) white rum

  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) orange liquor such as triple sec

  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) sea buckthorn concentrate

  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml.) orange or lemon juice

  • optional: a little of honey

  • ice cubes

  • orange wedges, for garnish

Directions

  • Combine water with the sea buckthorns in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 7-10 minutes, mashing the berries to help them release juices. Off heat and let it cool. Pass the berries through a fine mesh sieve, using a spoon to release as much juices as possible then discard the solids. You will have about 1/3 cup of the concentrate. You will not need all of it; keep it in an air-tight container or jar and keep refrigerated for up to a few days and use for other recipes.
  • In the shaker, combine the rum, orange liquor, orange or lemon juice, sea buckthorn concentrate, and ice and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. Try and adjust the flavour by adding more more alcohol, concentrate, or juice. Also, if the cocktail is too sour to your liking, you can add some honey. Shake again and filter if desired or serve over the ice (serving with ice will make the drink lighter as the ice melts). Garnish as desired and enjoy!

This Sea Buckthorn Cocktail sounds like a refreshing and unique blend perfect for autumn! The combination of citrusy sea buckthorn with rum and orange liquor creates a delicious balance of flavors, and I love the idea of adding honey for extra sweetness if needed. It’s also great to know that sea buckthorns are packed with vitamin C, making this not only a tasty treat but a bit of an immune booster too!
