What Are Sea Buckthorns and Their Benefits

Sea buckthorn berries (also known as seaberries) are small, bright orange berries known for their intense tart flavour and vibrant colour. They are naturally rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids, which makes them popular in juices, syrups, and wellness-focused recipes. In cocktails, sea buckthorn adds a bold citrusy acidity that feels fresh, lively, and pleasantly sharp without being artificial.

Flavour Profile

This cocktail is light and crisp with a pronounced citrus tang. The rum provides a smooth backbone, the orange liqueur adds gentle sweetness and aroma, and the sea buckthorn concentrate delivers a sharp, refreshing finish. The texture is clean and fluid, especially when served over ice.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Orange Sea Buckthorn Cocktail

To make this Orange Sea Buckthorn Cocktail, you’ll need a small batch of homemade sea buckthorn concentrate along with a few classic bar ingredients.

  • Sea buckthorn berries. Fresh or frozen berries both work well and provide intense flavour and colour.

Ingredients

  • Sea Buckthorn Concentrate:
  • 1/2 cup (about 75 gr.) sea buckthorns, fresh or frozen

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml.) water

  • Sea Buckthorn Cocktail:
  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) white rum

  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) orange liqueur such as triple sec

  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) sea buckthorn concentrate

  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml.) orange or lemon juice

  • optional: a little of honey

  • ice cubes

  • orange wedges, for garnish

Directions

  • Combine the sea buckthorn berries and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 7–10 minutes, gently mashing the berries to release their juices. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing firmly to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids. You will have about 1/3 cup of concentrate. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to several days.
  • Add the rum, orange liqueur, sea buckthorn concentrate, citrus juice, and ice to a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously until well chilled, adjust with a little honey if desired, then strain into a glass or serve over fresh ice and garnish with an orange wedge.
