Hey, folks – I hope you’re all doing well! Summer heat calls for cold drinks, and sometimes those drinks deserve a little kick. This Passion Fruit Milkshake is creamy, tropical, and just boozy enough to make things interesting. So let’s dive into this delicious dessert!

Why You’ll Love This Passion Fruit Milkshake

There are plenty of reasons to make this tropical milkshake.

  • Rich and Creamy. A generous amount of vanilla ice cream creates an incredibly smooth texture.
  • Tropical Flavour. Passion fruit liqueur adds vibrant fruity notes and a subtle tanginess.
  • Easy to Make. The recipe comes together in just a few minutes.
  • No Milk Required. Unlike many milkshakes, this version relies entirely on ice cream and liqueur.
  • Adults-Only Treat. A fun and sophisticated twist on a classic milkshake.
  • Perfect for Summer. Cool, refreshing, and ideal for warm weather.

What Makes This Crème de Fruit de la Passion Milkshake Different?

Many passion fruit milkshakes rely on juice, syrup, puree, or fresh fruit. While those ingredients can certainly be delicious, this version takes a different approach.

Instead of adding liquid dairy or fruit juice, I use passion fruit liqueur. The liqueur contributes both flavour and enough liquid to create the perfect consistency. At the same time, it introduces complexity and aroma that would be difficult to achieve with juice alone.

The result is a tropical milkshake that tastes rich and creamy while still feeling bright and refreshing. The flavour is somewhat reminiscent of a tropical creamsicle, combining vanilla, passion fruit, and subtle citrus notes into one delicious dessert drink.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Boozy Passion Fruit Milkshake

This easy summer milkshake requires only a few ingredients.

  • Vanilla Ice Cream. The foundation of the recipe. Use a good-quality brand for the best flavour and texture.
  • Passion Fruit Liqueur. Crème de Passion works beautifully, but other passion fruit liqueurs can be used as well.
  • Salt (Optional). A tiny pinch helps balance the sweetness and enhance the tropical flavours.
  • Fresh Passion Fruit. Perfect for garnish and visual appeal.

Possible Additions and Variations

This milkshake is easy to customize.

  • Add orange zest for extra brightness.
  • Include a splash of dark rum.
  • Use coconut ice cream or add a splash of coconut rum for a tropical twist.
  • Add a small amount of frozen banana for extra body.

What Other Spirits Work Well in This Passion Fruit Milkshake?

Although passion fruit liqueur remains my favourite option for this boozy milkshake, several other spirits can create interesting variations.

  • Dark Rum. Adds caramel, spice, and molasses notes.
  • Aged Rum. Brings vanilla and oak flavours.
  • Orange Liqueur or Triple Sec. Emphasizes the tropical creamsicle character.
  • Coconut Rum. Creates an island-inspired version.
  • Vanilla Liqueur. Reinforces the dessert-like qualities of the drink.

Of course, passion fruit liqueur remains the best choice if you want the tropical fruit flavour to remain the star.

Understanding the Perfect Passion Fruit Milkshake Ratio

One of the reasons this recipe works so well is the balance between ice cream and liqueur.

For a thick, spoonable milkshake, use slightly more ice cream and a little less liqueur. For a thinner, more drinkable consistency, increase the amount of liqueur slightly.

As a general guideline, about 400–450 g (roughly 1 pint) of vanilla ice cream paired with 1/2 cup (120 ml) of passion fruit liqueur creates a milkshake that is rich, creamy, and easily sipped through a straw.

Unlike many milkshakes, there is no need to add milk. The liqueur already provides enough liquid while contributing flavour at the same time.

Tips for Making the Perfect Milkshake

A few simple tips can make a noticeable difference.

  • Use high-quality vanilla ice cream. Orange-flavoured ice cream will also work.
  • For easier blending, let the ice cream sit at room temperature until it begins to soften, about 10–15 minutes.
  • Chill the liqueur before mixing.
  • Chill the serving glasses.
  • Avoid adding ice, which can dilute both flavour and texture.
  • Add a small pinch of salt to balance sweetness.
  • Garnish with fresh passion fruit for extra flavour and visual appeal.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture.

How to Make This Passion Fruit Milkshake

Add the vanilla ice cream, passion fruit liqueur, and a pinch of salt (if using) to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. If needed, stop once or twice to scrape down the sides. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with fresh passion fruit pulp if desired. Serve immediately.
