Earl Grey Lavender Cocktail

Hello, folks! How are you doing? I hope you have had a productive week and are now ready for a relaxing weekend. Are you doing anything exciting?

And to kick the weekend off right, I have a delicious cocktail for you. Indeed not just any cocktail – this exquisite Earl Grey Lavender Cocktaili.

What is Earl Grey?

Earl Grey tea is a black tea infused with a citrus fruit, bergamot.

Bergamot is known for its aromatic and fragrant zest that is often used for flavouring. It’s commonly used to flavour beverages, cakes, cookies, and even some savoury foods. It has a complex aroma that is slightly citrusy, floral, and spicy, with a subtle bitterness.

Earl Grey tea has a robust aroma coming from black tea leaves and Bergamot with its zesty notes resembling the mix of oranges, grapefruits, and limes. It also has floral undertones, with hints of rose and lavender.

Earl Grey and Lavender Pairing

That’s why Earl Grey and lavender goes so well together. It’s harmonious, complex, and soothing, yet bright and refreshing. Please be sure to check some of the recipes featuring this pairing:

To make this Earl Grey Lavender Cocktail, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Rum works as the base spirit in this recipe. You will need light, white rum for this recipe. Dark or spiced rum are not the best options, but I believe they will work, too. If you don’t like or have rum, vodka or gin should work just fine; if going with gin, try picking a more neutral, less juniper-forward flavour.
  • Earl Grey tea bags â€“ for a Earl Grey Lavender syrup (concentrate). Decaffeinated tea will also perfectly work.
  • Dried culinary lavender buds â€“ for the concentrate. Be sure to use food-grade lavender.
  • Honey – for sweetening the concentrate. Be sure to add it at the end to avoid boiling as it could damage the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey.
  • Lemon – for added freshness.

The flavour profile of this cocktail is complex. It’s citrusy and fresh, floral, and with a pleasant hint of honey. I would not call it super refreshing, but it’s an excellent choice your an after-dinner drink.

Ingredients

  • Earl Grey Syrup
  • 1 cup (240 ml.) water

  • 1 Earl Grey tea bag

  • 1 tsp. dried lavender buds

  • 1-2 tbsp. (20-40 g.) honey

  • Earl Grey Lavender Martini:
  • 1 1/2 oz. (45 ml.) white rum

  • 1 oz. (30 ml.) Earl Grey Syrup

  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml.) lemon juice

  • ice cubes

  • lemon wedges and lavender sprig –
    optional, for garnish

Directions

  • To make the Earl Grey Syrup, add the water, lavender, and tea bag to a small pot. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes then stir in the honey; mix to dissolve. Let the syrup infuse while cooling then discard the bag and strain from the lavender buds.
  • In a shaker, combine the rum, earl grey lavender syrup, lemon juice, and ice and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Try and adjust the flavour by adding more rum, syrup, or lemon juice if desired (or, may be even more honey). Filter and serve neat for a stronger version or on the rocks with fresh ice. Garnish if desired.
  • Keep any leftovers of syrup refrigerated to create more fun cocktails or lemonades.
