This Gooseberry Mojito is a fun spin on a classic cocktail. Refreshing, pleasantly sweet, tart, and fruity, this summer cocktail recipe will not disappoint you!
Hello, folks! How are you doing? I hope you are enjoying your weekend and getting ready for a new week. But before we jump into another week, I have another cocktail to share with you.
I am talking about this luscious Gooseberry Mojito.
What Are Gooseberries?
Gooseberries are small, edible berries that grow on deciduous shrubs, primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. They come in a variety of colours, from green to dark red, and they are known for their tart to semi-sweet flavour. They are a good source of vitamins C and B5, dietary fibre, and antioxidants, too. I’m thinking now… does this make the Gooseberry Mojito a healthy cocktail, then? LOL
Joking aside, the gooseberries’ unique flavour profile makes them perfect for a refreshing summer cocktail like a mojito.
Ingredients You’ll Need for Gooseberry Mojito
To make this Gooseberry Mojito recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- Rum works as the base spirit in this recipe. You will need light, white rum for this recipe. Dark or spiced rum will not work as it will overpower the violet aroma. If you don’t like or have rum, vodka or gin should work just fine; if going with gin, try picking a more neutral, less juniper-forward flavour.
- Fresh gooseberries – for adding a sweet, tart, and fruity flavour. If fresh gooseberries are not available, you can use jam instead.
- Limes – juice and wedges for garnishing.
- Fresh mint leaves. Ideally, choose the variety with a delicate, subtle aroma.
- Sugar (or Simple Syrup) – for added sweetness and balanced flavour. Use raw sugar for an optional result. Honey will be a good option, too.
- Ice cubes – for chilling and serving.
- Sparkling water or club soda – optionally, for topping. I normally don’t add it and enjoy a mojito with plenty of ice instead.
- Extra lime wedges, gooseberries, and mint sprigs – for garnish.
How to Make Gooseberry Mojito
That’s super easy, really.
Muddle the gooseberries, lime juice, sugar (or syrup), and mint leaves in a small jug or shaker, crushing the berries and mint with a pestle (muddler). Pour into a glass and add a handful of ice. Pour over the gin, stirring with a long-handled spoon. Top up with soda water (if desired), garnish with gooseberries, lime wedges, and mint and enjoy!

This looks wonderful but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a gooseberry. Will need to look around. I do love drinks with rum
I need to find me some fresh gooseberries to make this mojito! I love the color and flavor profile. By the way, have you heard of or used ground cherries in a similar manner? I brought some back from a farmers market in NYC and wonder if I could use those to replicate this -instead of the gooseberries?
I have so many gooseberry recipes that I would love to make — including this mojito — but gooseberries just aren’t possible to find here. When I lived in New England, it was illegal to grow them because they carried the white pine blister. This mojito looks amazing — please raise a glass in our honor and pray that someday gooseberries will find their way to our market!
I love this cocktail for the summer! I don’t think I can get fresh gooseberries around here – or maybe I just don’t know where to look. Creative idea for using them, though!
A nice twist for this well-known cocktail !
Gooseberries! I’ve never heard of them! I need to find them.
I need to find these beautiful coloured gooseberries. The ones we get here are orange and very tart.
How delightful! My husband loves gooseberries and I might just whip up one for him :-))
What a special drink — I haven’t seen fresh gooseberries too much, but if I ever did, I would definitely make this!
