Apple Dulce De Leche Crumble

Hello, everyone! How’s fall been treating you so far? Can you believe it’s almost October? #HallowenAroundTheCorner #ThanksgivingAroundTheCorner #ChristmasAlmostAroundTheCorner

Have you been enjoying a lot of autumn treats and cozy food? I know some of you have switched to pumpkin recipes already while I am posting my first apple recipe of this season. October is for apples (and a few pumpkins) on my blog. And I am happy to introduce this amazing and luscious Apple Dulce De Leche Crumble!

Who doesn’t like a good crumble or crisp? Who doesn’t like a good apple crumble or crisp? Lastly, who doesn’t like a good apple crumble or crisp with nuts? But I have a feeling you probably haven’t tried Apple Dulce De Leche Crumble. And I am telling you: you’re missing out a lot, my friends. Of you don’t have a jar of dulce de leche, you can easily use caramel instead (salted caramel is a great option, too). How does it work? Apples and dulce de leche while sitting in the oven, mingle and turn into a luscious concoction. Pecans add a lovely nutty flavour and a crunchy texture. Cinnamon and the buttery crumbs complete the profile.

Want something extra decadent? Go ahead and top this dessert with a scoop of ice cream and drizzle with an extra of dulce de leche. No one will judge you.

And if you like this recipe, you will probably like this Maple Apple Crumble, too.

And now, grab a large spoon and please dig in.

Cheers.

Ingredients

  • 3 apples, cored, optionally peeled – I prefer tart or semi-tart apples

  • 1 cup (about 100 g.) pecans, roughly chopped

  • 1/2 tbsp. corn starch – can substitute flour

  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp. ground cardamom

  • a pinch of salt

  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)

  • about 1/2 cup (150 g.) thick dulce de leche – or more, as desired

  • 3/4 cup (95 g.) all-purpose flour – may need slightly more

  • 6 tbsp. (85 g) cold butter plus 1 tbsp. (15 g) more, for greasing

  • 1 tbsp. (12 g.) light brown sugar

  • a pinch of cinnamon

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F). Grease a 6 inch (or a little larger) baking dish with 1 tablespoon butter.
  • Thinly slice or cube the apples into 1.5 cm chunks and place them in a bowl. Sprinkle with the cinnamon, cardamom, corn starch, and salt. If using, add the vanilla. Stir in the pecans.
  • Spread out the filling evenly in the prepared dish. Add small spoonfuls of the Dulce de Leche evenly across the tops of the apples.
  • On a cutting board, chop the butter with a knife then add the sugar and flour (you can also add a pinch of salt and cinnamon) and stir with your fingers until the mixture remains crumbs. If it’s too dry, add a tablespoon butter more. If it’s a little too sticky, add a little more flour.
  • Evenly scatter the crumbs over the apple filling. Place the dish in the oven for about 35-45 minutes or until lightly golden and crispy.
  • Remove and let cool a little before serving. Enjoy with optional ice cream and extra drizzle of dulce de leche!

Oh my goodness, Ben. I NEED a big plate of this right now! I think the only way to improve on apple crisp is by adding dulce de leche. Have a great weekend, my friend!

  2. I absolutely love a good apple crisp! My grandma used to make peach crisps in the summer and apple crisps in the Fall. I’ve got such good memories of those! Now I need to try putting the Ben spin on it and add in some dulce de leche. Excellent idea, my friend. Welcome to apple season! :-)
