This Blackcurrant Mojito is a refreshing and vibrant twist on the classic mojito, combining tart blackcurrants, fresh mint, and bright lime with a touch of sweetness and rum. It’s a balanced and flavourful blackcurrant cocktail with a slightly deeper, more complex profile than the traditional version, yet it remains light, crisp, and perfect for warm weather.

Hey, folks – today, I’m continuing my love for refreshing summer drinks with a slightly different take on a classic. While mojitos are already wonderfully bright and herbaceous, adding berries introduces a whole new layer of flavour and colour. So, let’s dive into this Blackcurrant Mojito.

Why You’ll Love This Blackcurrant Mojito

This blackcurrant cocktail is simple, refreshing, and just a little more interesting than your usual mojito.

  • Bright and refreshing: A perfect summer mojito variation with citrus and mint.
  • Unique berry twist: Blackcurrants bring a bold, tangy flavour.
  • Balanced sweetness: Tart berries paired with lime and a touch of sugar.
  • Easy to make: No complicated steps or tools required.
  • Flavour complexity: Blackcurrants add a slightly tannic, almost wine-like depth that makes this cocktail stand out.
  • Perfect for warm weather: Ideal for summer gatherings and casual entertaining.

Blackcurrants – The Once-Banned Berry

If you live in the United States — where many of my readers are — you might not be very familiar with blackcurrants (Ribes nigrum). For many years, they were banned from cultivation and sale due to concerns about plant disease affecting white pines. Although the nationwide ban was lifted long ago, some restrictions still remain in certain states. As a result, blackcurrants never became as common as other berries.

That’s a shame because blackcurrants have a truly distinctive flavour. They are intensely aromatic, tart, and slightly tannic, with subtle earthy notes. Their taste is often described as a cross between grape and cherry, with a unique herbal edge.

They are also rich in vitamin C, anthocyanins, and antioxidants, and are often associated with immune support and overall health benefits.

Even if fresh blackcurrants are hard to find, you can still enjoy them in jams, syrups, or liqueurs such as crème de cassis — all of which work beautifully in cocktails like this blackcurrant mojito.

Flavour Profile

This Blackcurrant Mojito is vibrant and layered. The blackcurrants add a tart, slightly tannic and fruity flavour, while mint contributes freshness and aroma. Lime juice brightens everything, and the rum provides warmth and structure. Altogether, this refreshing mojito is crisp, lightly sweet, and pleasantly tangy.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Blackcurrant Mojito

To make this Blackcurrant Mojito cocktail, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Rum works as the base spirit in this recipe. You will need light, white rum for this recipe. Dark or spiced rum will not work as it will overpower the violet aroma. If you don’t like or have rum, vodka or gin should work just fine; if going with gin, try picking a more neutral, less juniper-forward flavour.
  • Fresh blackcurrants â€“ for adding a sweet, tart, and fruity flavour. If fresh berries are not available, you can use jam instead.
  • Limes â€“ juice and wedges for garnishing.
  • Fresh mint leaves. Ideally, choose the variety with a delicate, subtle aroma.
  • Sugar (or Simple Syrup) â€“ for added sweetness and balanced flavour. Use raw sugar for an optional result. Honey will be a good option, too.
  • Ice cubes â€“ for chilling and serving.
  • Sparkling water or club soda â€“ optionally, for topping. I normally don’t add it and enjoy a mojito with plenty of ice instead.
  • Extra lime wedges, blackcurrant, and mint sprigs â€“ for garnish.

Possible Variations

This blackcurrant mojito is flexible and easy to customize.

  • Use crème de cassis instead of fresh berries for a smoother texture.
  • Make a non-alcoholic version by skipping the rum.
  • Try a frozen version by blending all ingredients with ice.

How to Make Blackcurrant Mojito

Start by adding the blackcurrants, mint, and lime juice to a glass. Gently muddle to release the juices and ароматics, being careful not to overwork the mint.

Next, add the sweetener and rum, then fill the glass with ice. Top with sparkling water and stir gently to combine.

Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity if needed. Garnish with extra mint, berries, or lime, and serve immediately.

Tips for the Best Blackcurrant Mojito

Although this easy mojito recipe is straightforward, a few small tips can improve the result.

  • Don’t over-muddle the mint: It can turn bitter if crushed too aggressively.
  • Adjust sweetness carefully: Blackcurrants can be quite tart, so balance to taste.
  • Use crushed or small ice: It chills the drink faster and improves texture.
  • Taste before serving: A quick adjustment makes a big difference.
