I hope you are excited about fall and all the seasonal produce that it can offer. Today I am sharing my first recipe of this season. Are you familiar with sea buckthorns?
What Are Sea Buckthorns?
I think it would be safe to suggest that may not be familiar with sea buckthorns (especially considering that the majority of my readers are from the USA and Canada.)
Hippophae is the genus of sea buckthorns, deciduous shrubs in the family Elaeagnaceae. Other common names include sea berry (perhaps, the most common in North America), sandthorn, sallowthorn, and even Siberian pineapple (what a cool name!) They are plump, juicy bright orange berries, with a fresh, citrusy, acidic flavour. As you can probably guess, one of the distinctive characteristics of these shrubs are thorns. And they have many health benefits, too.
Last year, our sea buckthorns tree finally established and gave us first harvest. It was not a lot of berries, but it was enough to make a few recipes, including this Orange Sea Buckthorn Milkshake. This year we got much more of the berries, but I will share these recipes next year.
Orange Sea Buckthorn Milkshake
This milkshake is a breeze to make, and fun to enjoy!
You will need to extract the juice first. To make this, you need to combine berries with a bit of water and simmer for a few minutes, also mashing them. Then pass the berries though a mesh sieve / strainer. Now, you can make the milkshake.
Other ingredients include vanilla ice cream (of course), milk, and orange liquor such as triple sec. Optionally, you can add a squeeze of orange juice. And of course, orange-flavoured ice cream would be great in here, too.
