Hey, folks — today we’re making a proper bowl of comfort. While classic chicken orzo soup is already a favourite, adding beans gives it extra body and protein, turning it into a complete, filling meal. It’s the kind of soup that tastes even better the next day and keeps you warm from the inside out. So, let’s dive into this Chicken Orzo Soup.

Why You’ll Love This Chicken Orzo Soup

  • Hearty and filling. The combination of chicken, orzo, and beans makes this soup satisfying enough for dinner.
  • Comforting. A rich homemade broth and tender vegetables create classic comfort-food flavour.
  • Balanced texture. Soft orzo, creamy beans, and shredded chicken make every spoonful substantial.
  • Great for leftovers. The flavours deepen beautifully overnight.
  • Flexible. You can swap beans, herbs, or spice levels depending on what you have on hand.

Flavour and Texture Profile

This Chicken Orzo Soup is savoury, gently smoky, and layered with subtle warmth from paprika and chipotle. The broth is rich but not heavy, while carrots add natural sweetness. The orzo gives the soup body without making it overly thick, and the beans provide creaminess and substance. Altogether, it’s rustic, comforting, and deeply satisfying.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Chicken Orzo Soup

To make this Chicken Orzo Soup, you’ll use simple, wholesome ingredients that build flavour layer by layer.

  • Chicken thighs. Bone-in thighs create a richer, more flavourful broth and tender shredded meat. You can use skin-on for depth, then remove the skin after simmering.
  • Beans. Creamy beans add protein, body, and heartiness, transforming this into a filling meal rather than just a light soup.
  • Orzo. This small pasta gives the soup its signature texture, making it more substantial while still spoonable.
  • Olive oil. Used to sauté the vegetables and enhance the overall richness of the soup.
  • Onion and garlic. These aromatics form the savoury base and add gentle sweetness as they cook.
  • Carrots. Thick slices add natural sweetness, colour, and subtle texture contrast.
  • Smoked paprika and chipotle powder. These bring warmth and a mild smoky note without making the soup spicy.
  • Bay leaves and herbs. Thyme, oregano, or Italian seasoning deepen the broth and give it a rustic, Mediterranean feel.
  • Salt. Adjust to taste depending on how concentrated your broth becomes during simmering.

Possible Additions and Variations

  • Add celery for extra aromatic depth.
  • Stir in a handful of spinach at the end for colour and freshness.
  • Finish with a squeeze of lemon juice for brightness.
  • Replace orzo with small pasta shapes like ditalini if preferred.
  • Make it thicker by increasing the orzo slightly, or thinner by adding more broth.

How to Make Chicken Orzo Soup

To prepare this Chicken Orzo Soup, simmer the chicken thighs in water until the meat is tender and easily pulls from the bone. Remove the chicken, discard the skins, shred the meat, and reserve the broth.

In a separate pot, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until softened. Add the carrots and cook briefly to build flavour.

Pour in the reserved broth along with the bay leaves, herbs, and spices. Simmer until the carrots are nearly tender, then stir in the beans, shredded chicken, and orzo. Cook until the orzo is just tender.

Adjust the seasoning and add a little extra water if the soup becomes thicker than you prefer. Serve warm and enjoy.’
