Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon is a vibrant, Japanese-inspired dish made with tender wakame, silky smoked salmon, crisp vegetables, and sesame. This refreshing salad balances soft, chewy, and crunchy textures while delivering bold umami flavour in every bite.
Hey folks, today we’re making something light yet satisfying — the kind of salad that feels elegant but takes very little effort. If you enjoy contrast in texture and clean, savoury flavours, this one is a winner. So, let’s dive into this Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon.
Why You’ll Love This Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon
- Texture contrast: Chewy seaweed, silky salmon, crunchy vegetables, and nutty sesame.
- Fresh yet filling: Light, but the salmon makes it satisfying.
- Quick to assemble: Ready in under 15 minutes.
- Beautiful presentation: Colourful, glossy, and visually striking.
- Customizable: Easy to adapt with different vegetables or dressing.
Flavour and Texture Profile
This salad is all about balance.
The wakame is soft and pleasantly chewy. Smoked salmon adds silky richness and gentle saltiness. Crisp vegetables bring crunch and freshness, while sesame seeds add nutty depth.
Because the seaweed is lightly dressed with sesame oil, the flavour is savoury, slightly sweet, and aromatic. Each bite delivers contrast — tender, chewy, crisp, and smooth — without feeling heavy.
Ingredients You’ll Need for This Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon
To make this Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon, you’ll need:
- Prepared seaweed salad (wakame). Pre-dressed for convenience, or plain rehydrated seaweed with homemade dressing.
- Smoked salmon. Adds silky texture and savoury richness.
- Fresh vegetables. Such as cucumber, red bell pepper, or scallions for crunch and colour.
- Sesame seeds. Black, white, or both for nutty flavour and visual contrast.
- Optional additions. Avocado, chili flakes, or a squeeze of lemon for brightness.
A Note About the Wakame
For this recipe, I used pre-dressed seaweed salad (the kind typically sold in the refrigerated section, already seasoned with sesame oil and rice vinegar). This makes the recipe incredibly quick and convenient.
If you are using plain, dried wakame, simply rehydrate it according to package instructions and prepare a quick dressing:
- 1–2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
- Optional: grated ginger or a pinch of chili flakes
Toss the seaweed with the dressing before assembling the salad.
Possible Variations and Additions
- Add sliced avocado for creaminess.
- Toss in shredded carrots for extra crunch.
- Add edamame for protein.
- Include pickled ginger for brightness.
- Serve over sushi rice for a heartier meal.
How to Make Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon
To make this Seaweed Salad with Smoked Salmon, start by placing the prepared seaweed in a large bowl. If using plain wakame, toss it first with the sesame dressing.
Add thinly sliced smoked salmon and chopped vegetables. Gently fold everything together so the salmon stays in delicate pieces rather than breaking apart too much.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve immediately. For best texture, avoid overmixing.

I adore seaweed salad and order it every time I get sashimi at our neighborhood restaurant. I’ve never tried making it myself, but you’ve inspired me with your beautiful dish!

Thank you John!
What a great idea, Ben! I’ve only had seaweed salad in simple forms before…never as the base to a full meal. This definitely needs to happen in our house! I also love all things smoked, so the smoked salmon caught me eye. Same with the smoked oysters! Speaking of oysters, have you ever had grilled oysters? They’re yummy – and you have a grill now!!
Nope, I haven’t had grilled oysters – need to give it a try! Thank you David!
We can harvest seaweed here, with a permit. But it’s not sold commercially. This sounds very good Ben.
Harvesting seaweed – how interesting!
