Hello, folks! How are you doing? I hope you are having a good and productive week.

Today, I am taking a break from posting cocktail recipes (just for one or two posts!) and sharing a salsa recipe instead. This Papaya Salsa recipe, to be precise. Given that it’s the season for grilled foods and gatherings, this recipe is perfect for the occasion.

Papaya Salsa Recipe

There is nothing complicated about this recipe. Simply peel, cube, mix, and season everything, and you are good to go! To make this salsa, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Papaya – small-medium, ripe fruit; you will need about one pound (450 grams). Choose the fruit that is ripe yet still firm and not too mushy.
  • Shallots – add a mild onion aroma and a hint of sweetness. You can swap it for sweet red onion.
  • Sweet green pepper – adds the crunch and juiciness.
  • Jalapeno – adds a spicy kick. Be sure to remove all the seeds and membranes (white pith) as they are the spiciest part of jalapenos. You can also play with different types of hot peppers going with less or more spicy varieties. If you don’t like too spicy food (although this salsa isn’t that spicy at all), poblano peppers will be an excellent option.
  • Fresh herbs – I used a combination of mint, oregano, and parsley. You can use only one or a combo of herbs. While I am not a fan of coriander leaves (cilantro), it will be a lovely addition.
  • Fresh lime juice – just a little drizzle for added freshness and tanginess.
  • Pink peppercorns – optional, add a hint of freshness.
  • Salt – just a touch to balance out all the flavours.

How to Store Papaya Salsa

You can make this Papaya Salsa in advance. The salsa will stay fresh for at least two days in an air-tight container, preferably glass. I will not recommend keeping the salsa longer that 2 days, as the papaya will get too soft.

However, if you use a papaya that is firmer, the shelf life of this recipe can be slightly extended.

How to Serve This Salsa?

This salsa is perfect for serving with your grilled foods like meat, poultry, and, fish. Seafood will be an excellent choice too. Fore example, you can use it instead of a passion fruit sauce in this recipe for Seared Scallops with Avocado Mousse and Passion Fruit Sauce.

This salsa is great served with tortilla chips or as a topping for your tacos. (Think of shrimp tacos!)

Or, you can simply enjoy it with some crusty bread or as a bruschetta topping.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 small-medium ripe but firm papaya (about 1 lb. or 450 g.) – peeled, seeded, and cubed

  • 1-2 shallots, minced

  • 1/2 sweet green pepper – cored, seeded, and cubed

  • 1/2 to 1 jalapeno – cored, seeded, and minced

  • a small bunch of fresh herbs, chopped – I used mint, oregano, and parsley

  • salt, to taste

  • few pink peppercorn, crushed

  • juice of 1/4 lime or more, to taste

Directions

  • Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and gently mix together. Taste for seasonings and adjust if necessary. Enjoy with your grilled meat, fish, or seafood, with corn tortillas or bread of your choice. Chill before serving. Papaya salsa is best to enjoy within one day, but it will last for 2-3 days in an air-tight glass container, refrigerated.

  2. This is a great summer salsa, Ben!! I don’t use papaya often at all, but I’m looking forward to trying this recipe very, very soon.

  3. I love papaya but have never seen it made it into salsa. As usual, your photos and recipe look and sound delicious. I’ll have to give this one a try.

  5. That papaya salsa looks incredibly vibrant, Ben! I love how you’ve balanced the sweetness of the papaya with the bite of shallots and a touch of heat from jalapeños. Definitely making this for the next BBQ, thinking it’ll be perfect on grilled prawns or even just with some crusty sourdough.
