Whiskey Blackberry Halloween Cocktail: Flavour Profile

This cocktail brings together sweet, tart, and herbal elements in perfect harmony. The blackberries lend a deep fruitiness and natural colour, while the whiskey adds smooth, smoky warmth. The rosemary infuses a subtle piney aroma that gives the drink its autumnal depth. Together, they create a cocktail that’s bold and balanced – velvety on the palate, fragrant, and slightly mysterious, just like Halloween itself.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Recipe

  • Whiskey: The foundation of the cocktail, offering depth and warmth. Use bourbon for a sweeter touch or rum for a softer flavour.
  • Orange liqueur: Adds a zesty sweetness that brightens the dark fruit and herbs.
  • Blackberries: Provide both flavour and that beautiful, deep hue. Fresh or frozen work equally well.
  • Orange juice (optional): Lightens the drink and adds a fresh citrus note if you prefer a less intense cocktail.
  • Rosemary sprig: Infuses the drink with subtle herbal aroma; muddle lightly or use as garnish.
  • Extra blackberries and rosemary: For garnish – they add contrast and an elegant finishing touch.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. whiskey (bourbon or rum would work)

  • 1 oz. orange liquor

  • 5-8 blackberries (fresh or frozen)

  • 1/2 to 1 oz. orange juice (optional, for lighter version)

  • 1 small rosemary sprig

  • Extra blackberries and rosemary, for serving

Directions

  • Mash the blackberries and the rosemary with a pestle, just 5 seconds to release the rosemary flavour (Do not mash the rosemary too enthusiastically. We just need a little of its essential oil. Otherwise, your cocktail might turn turn withy too strong, perfume, aroma.) Discard the rosemary.
  • For the cocktail, combine the whiskey, orange liquor, mashed blackberries (with juices), and orange juice (if using). If desired, add some ice. Shake for 10 seconds to blend, try, and add more licorice base if desired. Enjoy!

Given that it’s Monday morning right now, I might need to wait a couple days until it’s more socially acceptable to have a drink. Haha! Thanks for the inspiration, Ben!

  11. I will make this for a friend the next time she visits but first I’m going to buy Glenmorangie’s new whisky that’s made for mixing. It has hints of orange in it which will compliment this recipe perfectly.
