Violet Cocktail
If you have been following my blog for a while, you probably know that I am a big fan of botanical flavours. And floral cocktail, too. Today, however, is a special day for me because it’s the first recipe with Crème de Violette. First but surely not the last!
If you love floral flavour profiles in cocktails, then you will love this recipe.
This cocktail has a distinctive sweet and floral violet aroma, balanced by rum and citrus juice. It has a long-lasting finish of the violet aroma making the cocktail perfect for sipping.
Ingredients You’ll Need for Violet Cocktail
You will need only three ingredients for this cocktail.
- Rum works as the base spirit in this recipe. You will need light, white rum for this recipe. Dark or spiced rum will not work as it will kill the violet aroma. If you don’t like or don’t have rum, vodka or gin should work just fine; if going with gin, try picking a more neutral, less juniper-forward flavour.
- Crème de Violette works as both a modifier and sweetener. This is a liqueur with a strong, distinct violet flavour often described as having a perfumed aftertaste. And since this liqueur is very sweet, you don’t need any additional sweetener.
- Fresh lemon or lime juice – a modifier that adds more flavour and balances out the sweetness. Both work well.
Possible Additions and Variations
- Vanilla liqueur: A small splash adds warmth and rounds out the floral notes beautifully.
- Fresh berries: Gently muddled raspberries or blackberries enhance colour and add subtle fruitiness.
- Citrus swap: Try lemon instead of lime for a sharper, more classic profile.
- Sparkling finish: Top with a splash of prosecco or soda for a lighter, aperitif-style version.
- Herbal accent: A sprig of thyme or lavender can add a subtle aromatic garnish.
