This Blackcurrant White Wine Sangria featuring Triple Sec, apples, and mint is a refreshing and delightful summer twist on a classic recipe. Perfect for sipping on a hot sunny day and summer gatherings.
Hello, folks! What’s up? I hope you are having a good week and are getting ready for the weekend. I am taking two vacation days and am excited about the extended weekend.
However, as a responsible person, I cannot leave you without a tasty summer cocktail. And trust me, this one will not disappoint you. Refreshing and delicious, Blackcurrant White Wine Sangria is a perfect summer drink.
What is Sangria Anyway?
What is a Sangria anyway?
Sangria is a mixed alcoholic beverage originating from Spain and Portugal. It traditionally consists of red wine, fruit or berries, and other spirits. Oranges, lemons, and apples are common ingredients, but these options are endless. A traditional sangria often includes spirits like brandy or orange liqueur (e.g., Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier). But just like with the fruit part, you can play with other spirits, especially fruit-flavoured liqueurs, to create fun versions.
A sangria is a refreshing and light cocktail with a boozy kick, thanks to mixing different spirits. It is known for its complexity and the combination of sweet and tart notes. That’s why it is a perfect summer cocktail!
What Are Blackcurrants?
The blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), also known as black currant or cassis, is a deciduous shrub known for its edible berries with a unique character and flavour profile. Black currants have a distinctive, strong, tart (due to tannins), and tangy flavour with earthy undertones. Their taste is often described as having notes of grape and cherry. Blackcurrants are rich in Vitamin C, anthocyanins, and other antioxidants. They are linked to improved blood flow, immune system support, eye health, and potentially reducing cardiovascular disease risk.
But did you know that blackcurrants had been banned in the United States for years? You can read more in my previous post featuring a recipe for Blackcurrant Mojito.
Ingredients You’ll Need for Blackcurrant White Wine Sangria
To make this Blackcurrant White Wine Sangria, you will need the following ingredients:
- White wine – the base spirit of this sangria. I used Pinot Grigio, but any good-quality wine of your choice will do. I recommend going with a light, medium-dry or semi-sweet wine, but that is up to you. A rosé can be a nice substitution, too.
- Orange liqueur like Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier – adds the sweetness and a pleasant orange aroma.
- Fresh blackcurrants – for adding a sweet, tart, and fruity flavour. I will not recommend using frozen berries as they will have mushy texture.
- Apples – subtly infuse sangria and add a crunchy element. Any variety will work, but I prefer juicy, crisp, and semi-sweet fruit. You can use other fruit like pears, peaches, or apricots instead of apples.
- Fresh mint – for added freshness that goes well with black.
- Honey – optional, just if you want your sangria a bit sweeter.
How to Make Blackcurrant Sangria
That’s so easy. Simply combine in a pitcher the wine, raspberry liqueur, raspberries, and fresh mint. Try and adjust the flavour by adding a little lemon or sweetener. Refrigerate for 30-60 minutes and enjoy! I will not recommend making this version way too far in advance, as the fruit will start getting mushy after two hours or even earlier. And don’t forget to fill your glass with some ice cubes to make this experience even more enjoyable!
