Hello, folks! I hope you all have had a great weekend and that you are in the mood for the weekend now.

And if you are looking for something extra special to indulge in during the weekend, I have this recipe for French toasts for you. And not just any toasts – toasts with dulce de leche! How about that?!

Easy French Toasts with Dulce de Leche

Just like with my previous recipe for Dulce de Leche Candied Pecans, I had wanted to make French toasts with dulce de leche for a long time. And just like with the abovementioned recipe, I was skeptical thinking the result would be a messy situation. There’s a thing, though. I did not want just French toasts served with dulce de leche. That’s easy. I wanted to add dulce de leche directly into the egg custard mixture.

This recipe turned out to be successful from the very first attempt; there was no need to be worried.

But please don’t worry. Despite a generous amount of dulce de leche, these French toasts are not overly sweet at all. Their flavour is rich and creamy, with a hint of caramel that is complimented with vanilla and salt.

Ingredients for This Recipe

As the heading suggests, everything is easy!

Basically, you make a creamy egg custard and add dulce de leche. The recipes for custard vary, but I used the following ingredients: eggs, milk, table or 18% cream, salt, and vanilla. Plus, dulce de leche and butter for frying.

As for a choice of bread, go with a good quality sandwich, brioche, challah, or even cinnamon loaf. I used for this recipe Molasses bread, and it worked well.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 thick sliced of bread e.g., good quality sandwich bread, Brioche, or Challah – I used Molasses bread

  • 1/3 cup (80 ml.) milk

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml.) half-and-half (10% cream) or table cream (18 % cream)

  • 4 eggs

  • 1/2 cup (150 g.) dulce de leche

  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • a good pinch of salt

  • butter, for frying

  • extra dulce de leche, toasted nuts, etc. – optional, for serving

Directions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, salt, and dulce de leche. Using an immersion blender, blend until combined. If using a regular blender, combine all the ingredients in a cup of your blender and pulse a few times until combined; avoid high speed.
  • Melt some butter in a large, preferably, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium high heat.
  • Place each slice of bread into the milk egg mixture, allowing the bread to soak in. Depending on the type of bread, the soaking time will vary. If you are using delicate bread like brioche, soak for at least 15-20 seconds from each side. If you are using sandwich bread, aim for 45-60 seconds from each side. If your bread is stale, you may need to soak longer.
  • Shake off the excess egg mixture from the bread and place the bread slices onto the hot skillet. Fry the French toasts until browned on one side, 2 to 3 minutes, then flip and brown the other side. Repeat with the remaining bread.
  • Serve French Toasts hot or warm with toppings of your choice. They are delicious as they are, but some dulce de leche and nuts will be a great addition.

Notes

  • Depending on the density / texture of your bread, it may be able to absorb less or more of the custard. The recipe for custard will be enough for at least 6 pieces of bread, but you should have up to 8 slices for any case.
