  • Vibrant Colour: The deep purple colour makes this drink especially beautiful for entertaining.
  • Flexible: You can easily adjust sweetness or berry intensity to suit your taste.

What Is a Daiquiri?

The daiquiri is a classic rum cocktail that originated in Cuba in the late 19th century. In its traditional form, it is made with just three ingredients: rum, fresh lime juice, and sugar. The drink became popular in Havana bars and later spread worldwide thanks to its bright, refreshing flavour and simple preparation.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Cocktail

To make this Blackberry Daiquiri, you only need a handful of ingredients that work together to create a balanced cocktail.

  • Blackberries: Fresh blackberries give the drink its colour and fruity flavour. Frozen berries can also work if fresh ones are unavailable.
  • White Rum: A light rum keeps the cocktail clean and refreshing while letting the fruit shine.
  • Cointreau: A small splash of orange liqueur adds subtle citrus complexity.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Essential for brightness and balance in any daiquiri.
  • Sugar or Simple Syrup: Adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the lime and berries.
  • Ice: Used for shaking or blending to chill the drink.

Possible Additions and Variations

  • Frozen Version: Blend the ingredients with crushed ice for a slushy texture.
  • Mint Accent: A few mint leaves add freshness similar to a mojito.
  • Honey Syrup: Replace sugar syrup with honey syrup for a softer sweetness.
  • Spiced Rum: Adds warm spice notes to the cocktail.
  • Extra Citrus: A touch of lemon juice can increase brightness.

How to Make Blackberry Daiquiri

To make this Blackberry Daiquiri, you’ll combine fresh berries, lime juice, rum, and orange liqueur into a bright, refreshing cocktail. The key is extracting the berry flavour while keeping the drink smooth and balanced.

Start by adding the fresh blackberries, lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Using a muddler (or the back of a spoon), gently crush the berries for about 15–20 seconds until they release their juices and become pulpy. This step infuses the cocktail with the deep berry flavour and colour.

Next, pour in the white rum and Cointreau, then add a generous handful of ice. Close the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels very cold. Proper shaking chills the drink quickly and lightly dilutes it, which helps balance the citrus and alcohol.

Because blackberries contain many seeds, it’s best to double strain the cocktail – although I normally don’t do this because seeds don’t bother me. Pour the drink through a standard cocktail strainer and a fine mesh sieve into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. This removes the seeds and berry pulp, resulting in a smooth, elegant texture.

Finally, garnish the cocktail with a few fresh blackberries or a lime wheel. Serve immediately while well chilled.
