Hello everyone!
Yeah, it’s been almost three weeks since my previous post. Even though we returned from our vacation over a week ago, I haven’t been able to get back to my blogging routine. I always say that after a good vacation you need another vacation to rest from the first one lol. Don’t you agree? So, I decided to take a little break from recipes and share some photographs from our Newfoundland Trip (Part One).
Jump to RecipeNewfoundland Trip
Of course, Newfoundland (Newfoundland and Labrador is the full name) is a huge province where you can spend weeks for exploring. We spent here 8 nights – that’s quite a lot. But we didn’t want to rush and explored a relatively small part of it (Perhaps, about 1/7 or so of its onshore territory).
Twillingate
Our first two nights we spent in Twillingate – a small town located on the Twillingate islands which used to be one of the oldest fishing communities. The region is known for its scenic and rugged coastline. Also, Twillingate is a popular place in May – July when you can see drifting icebergs. Area around Twillingate also offer many beautiful sceneries and archeological formations. However, by September 3rd the touristic season was almost over for this area. And we cannot complain about – we enjoyed the peaceful time with almost no tourists around.
Bonavista Peninsula
After the Twillingate we drove (~400 km) towards the Bonavista Peninsula where we spent another two nights.
Cool Italian-sound name, right? There’s a story here.
When the Italian explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) was contracted by the England’s Henry VII to find new lands, he sailed in his ship from England in 1497. When Cabot first saw land he reputedly said “O Buon Vista” (“Oh, Happy Sight!”) Hence, the name of the peninsula and the nearby town.
One of the most popular activities around the Bonavista peninsula is the sites for watching puffins. Of course, September was too late to observe puffins, but it didn’t make us enjoy less the picturesque surroundings! By the way, the puffin is the official bird of Newfoundland & Labrador.
Wild Berries
So many wild berries in Newfoundland, too. Unfortunately, the cloudberries (Named “Bakeapple” in NL) had already gone, but blueberries, cranberries, and lingonberries (Named “partridgeberries” in NL) were in season. So tasty! If you are not familiar with cloudberries or lingonberries, you can check these recipes: Cloudberry Jam Ice Cream, Cloudberry Prosciutto Brie Crostini, Lingonberry Brie Naan Pizza, and Brie Lingonberry Jam Crostini.
Trinity, Brigus, and hmm… Dildo!
The last part of our travel to St. John’s, its capital. The way from Bonavista to St. John’s was, probably, the most interesting as it’s simply packed with beautiful places. Trinity, Brigus, and Dildo, to name a few. As we had 400 km of driving that day, unfortunately, we could not have as many stops as we would love to.
In fact, the charming town with a peculiar name Dildo become viral thanks to the Jimmy Kimmel’s show in 2019 (And who was also made the honorary mayor of Dildo.) You can take a look at those videos; they are quite hilarious. The city also got its own “Hollywood” sign!
The last stop of our vacation was, as I said, St. John’s. But that will be another post! :)
See you soon.
Hi – I’m Ben, a blogger, recipe developer, and food photographer. I’m glad you’re here! I hope you will enjoy hundreds of delicious recipes and a pinch of havoc in the kitchen.
It is such a beautiful country! I’ve only been as far as Prince Edward Island, and would love to get to Newfoundland sometime. I also love that you ended with a photograph of the two of you.
this looks so wonderful! Bucket list time!
Another beautiful and lovely sceneries. Your holiday looks really great and very colorful.
I just wanted to stop by to say we’ve just posted our last blog post. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your blog, and I’ll still be visiting. But we’ve got a lot of activities lined up that will be occupying my time, so my visits will be much more sporadic in the future. Best wishes to you.

Looks like a fun trip. And what a beautiful place… Now I’m curious to know what you ate there, other than berries, that is.
PS: Definitely going to check out those Jimmy Kimmel videos… !
Sooooo beautiful part of the world! This is my idea of vacation: nature, peace and quiet and normal temperatures. I am sure you had great time!!!!
Thank you for sharing Ben! The photos of all these little villages speaks to my island girl soul. And now I think I need to take my family to eastern Canada!

What beautiful country!! We spent time in western Canada this summer, but need to explore the east. I’ll be in Maine next month—and I imagine the scenery will be almost as spectacular as your photos!
Superb photographs Ben. Always great to see another side of a blogger’s life. I know what you mean about needing another holiday as soon as you’ve returned from one. Ha ha! Lynne and I just walked 79 miles on a trip in Scotland (The Great Glen Way) and we’re both exhausted. Nice to see both of you in the photographs too!

Beautiful photos, Ben! Nfl is definitely on my bucket list to visit one day! A car trip across the country might be a bit of a stretch, but maybe when the kids are older :)
I love these pictures, Ben! What a fun trip. Now you’ve convinced me to put Newfoundland on the vacation list. I have a friend from there, and I swear he’s from Twillingate…I’ll have to ask him now! Glad you guys had fun!

Nice holiday, interesting town name, Dildo, I wonder how they named it like such.
It is unclear indeed. One of the versions is that it was linked to a fishing / boating tool named this way.
Beautiful photos! Now I have to add it to my very long travel list!
Sounds like a wonderful trip! Love the pictures. Now I want to go there! :-)
