Black Widow Cocktail

Hello everyone – happy Halloween, if you are celebrating. If you don’t really, well, you can still enjoy some chocolates. And by “some” I totally mean a few dozens!

Halloween Ideas

It is my fourth and last Halloween recipe this season. Previously I also shared these Black Sesame Seed Crepes, Black Sesame Seed Vegetable Soup, and Black Sesame Seed Oatmeal. If you ask me, I would say that those crepes and this cocktail has been my favourite.

Also, all these four recipes include sesame seeds. Yeah, it is such a great ingredient for spooky yet tasty Halloween creations!

Black Widow Cocktail

When brainstorming this Halloween season’s ideas, I was wondering if you could use black sesame seeds in cocktail. I googled – and yeah – there were a few similar ideas. I randomly opted Black Widow Cocktail – a Halloween and Marvel drink recipe from a blog I was not familiar with for my inspiration.

I tweaked the original recipe significantly to my liking. What I definitely liked besides the black sesame syrup, was the use of blackberry liqueur. What a lovely and intriguing combination, isn’t it?

And in fact, it turned out great and sophisticated – so rich, sweet, nutty, and with a pleasant fruity note. If you cannot find or do not have blackberry liqueur, I think other fruit varieties will also work; think of raspberry, blackberry, cherry, apricot, or may be even passion fruit. It also has a pleasant, smooth and velvety consistency.

Recipe adapted from Black Widow Cocktail – a Halloween and Marvel drink – A Tipsy Giraffe

Ingredients

  • Black Sesame Seed Syrup:
  • 1 cup (120 gr.) toasted black sesame seeds

  • 1 cup (240 ml.) water

  • 1/2 cup (100 gr.) sugar

  • 2 tbsp. (~40 gr.) honey

  • Black Widow Cocktail:
  • 2 oz. dark spiced rum

  • 1 oz. blackcurrant liqueur

  • 1 to 1 and 1/2 oz. of syrup, filtered

  • few drops of lemon or lime juice

Directions

  • Black Sesame Seed Syrup:
  • Process the seeds in a blender / processor) until resemble the powder or paste (depending on how powerful your blender is. In a medium heavy-bottomed pot combine the powder/paste, water, sugar, and honey.
  •  Bring the mixture to a boil. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, whisking occasionally.
  • Remove from the heat and leave to cool completely.
  • Strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve, then repeat to achieve a smooth consistency. Keep it refrigerated for up to a week and use in drinks, desserts, over your ice cream, pancakes or crepes or oatmeal.
  • Black Widow Cocktail:
  • For the cocktail, in a shaker combine the rum, blackcurrant liqueur, syrup, and lemon/lime juice. Shake it well, try, and adjust the flavour if necessary (it will be quite sweet, so you may want to add more lemon/lime juice.) Enjoy!

Spooky and awesome cocktail, Ben! Love the warm and unexpected flavor combo here. Really a fun cocktail to serve all during the cold weather months.

What an interesting cocktail! The nutty flavor from the sesame seeds combined with the fruity flavor from the liqueur sounds tasty. This really would be the perfect drink for a night when ghosts and goblins are afoot! Hope you didn’t eat all of the Halloween candy before trick-or-treat time. Haha!
