Hey folks, today I’m sharing a cocktail that feels both refreshing and a little cozy at the same time. It’s one of those flavour combinations that might seem simple at first, but once you try it, you realize how beautifully everything works together. So, let’s dive into this Apple Sage Cocktail.

Why You’ll Love This Apple Sage Cocktail

  • Fresh and aromatic: Sage adds a subtle earthy note.
  • Balanced flavour: Tart apple juice keeps it bright.
  • Simple ingredients: Nothing complicated or hard to find.
  • Flexible: Can be lighter or stronger depending on your preference.
  • Perfect for multiple seasons: Works for both late summer and autumn.

Flavour Profile

This apple sage cocktail is crisp, slightly tart, and gently aromatic. The apple juice provides freshness and acidity, while sage introduces a soft herbal depth that feels warm but not heavy. Dark rum adds richness and a subtle spice, especially if you use a spiced variety. The result is a smooth, well-balanced drink with a refreshing yet comforting character.

Why Apple and Sage Work So Well

Apple and sage are a classic pairing. The natural acidity and fruitiness of apple balance the savoury, slightly peppery quality of sage. Together, they create a flavour that feels both fresh and grounded, making this cocktail especially versatile.

Ingredients You’ll Need for This Apple Sage Cocktail

It’s easy to make this apple sage cocktail with just a few ingredients:

  • Apple juice: Preferably tart for better balance.
  • Fresh sage: Adds herbal depth and aroma.
  • Dark rum: Provides warmth and richness; spiced rum works particularly well.
  • Maple syrup (optional): Adds a soft, natural sweetness.
  • Soda or water (optional): For a lighter version.

Possible Additions and Variations

Although this cocktail is already delicious, you can customize it easily:

  • Use bourbon: For a deeper, more autumnal flavour.
  • Add lemon juice: For extra brightness.
  • Make it sparkling: Top with soda for a refreshing twist.
  • Use honey instead of maple: For a slightly different sweetness.
  • Non-alcoholic version: Skip the rum and add sparkling water.

How to Infuse Apple Juice with Sage

To make the sage-infused apple juice, combine apple juice and sage leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool and infuse for 1–2 hours before straining. The longer it sits, the more pronounced the herbal flavour becomes, so adjust to your taste.

How to Make Apple Sage Cocktail

Combine the sage-infused apple juice and rum in a shaker with ice. Taste and add maple syrup if desired, then shake again. Strain into a glass over ice. If preferred, top with a splash of soda or water for a lighter drink.

Cocktail for Halloween

Although this apple sage cocktail works beautifully throughout the cooler months, it also fits perfectly into a moody, atmospheric setting. With its deep colour, herbal garnish, and subtle warmth, it feels especially at home on a candlelit table – making it a lovely option for Halloween gatherings or cozy autumn evenings.

Halloween and Autumn Serving Ideas

If you’re planning a seasonal gathering, this apple sage cocktail can easily lean into a more festive mood:

  • Serve in coupe or vintage-style glasses for a slightly dramatic look.
  • Garnish with whole sage leaves or small branches for a rustic feel.
  • Add dark berries or spiced elements for a deeper autumn tone.
  • Use candlelight and darker linens to enhance the atmosphere.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup apple juice, preferably tart

  • about 10 large fresh sage leaves

  • 2 oz. dark rum (I used black spiced)

  • 2 oz. sage infused apple juice

  • 1/4 to 1/2 oz. maple syrup (optional)

  • soda or water (optional)

Directions

  • Add the apple juice and sage in a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Off heat and let it completely cool and infuse, for 1-2 hours then discard the sage leaves.
  • For the cocktail, in a shaker combine the infused apple juice and rum. Try, and if you prefer it sweeter, add the maple syrup and shake again. The cocktail would be quite strong, so you may want to serve it on rocks or fill with a little of soda or water. Enjoy!
